White Onion (sweet onion) is a type of dry onion with pure, white skin and flesh that is almost translucent. It is part of the allium family that also includes garlic and chives. There are many varieties of white onion (Allium cepa), including Mauri, Walla Walla, and Vidalia.

 

Dried and chopped white onions are very common for both home cooks and chefs alike. They're well-known for their use in Mexican food to enhance the aroma and flavor. They also accent soups, stews, pasta, and more. The semi-sweet, mild and sharp flavor spices up salads, shish kebabs, hamburgers, and other popular foods.

 

Frontier Co-op chopped white, organic onions are a great alternative to whole onions for prepared food items, such as stir-frys, dressings, casseroles, and sauces. They deliver the flavor of whole, white onions but are ready to use. The sugary traits are similar to red onions and the mild, sharp flavor spices up any kitchen.

A splash of tamari adds depth, while juicy tomatoes and tender pinto beans bring it all together. Top it off with lime, cilantro and a sprinkle of dairy-free cheese, and you’ve got a cozy, flavor-packed bowl ready in about an hour.

Vegan Chili with Tofu & Beans in Brown Earthenware Handled Crock on Burlap Placemat with Tomatoes & Chili Peppers Strewn Around

Hearty Vegan Chili

  • 2 tsp. olive oil
  • 1 lb. extra-firm tofu (crumbled)
  • 1 clove garlic (minced)
  • 2 Tbsp. Frontier Co-Op Organic Chopped White Onion
  • 4 cups cooked pinto beans
  • 20 oz. canned whole tomatoes
  • 3 Tbsp. Frontier Co-Op Non-GMO Mexican Fiesta Seasoning
  • 1 Tbsp. tamari

Optional garnishes

  • Lime wedges
  • Cilantro
  • Dairy-free cheese
  • Green onions
  1. In large saucepan over medium, heat olive oil. Add tofu, minced garlic and chopped onion. Sauté until onions are hydrated and tender and tofu is browned.
  2. Add remaining ingredients and stir until well combined.
  3. Bring to low boil. Reduce heat and simmer 30 minutes.
  4. To serve, garnish with lime juice, cilantro, dairy-free cheese and/or green onions.
