You’ve heard of cranberry sauce, cranberry juice and even cranberry pills. But what in the world are cranberry beans? The answer may surprise you. (It surprised me!)

Cranberries have beans?

Not exactly. Cranberry beans are not related to the tart fruit – the name actually comes from the reddish pink streaks that adorn their outer layer. You may know them as borlotti beans or shell beans.

Are cranberry beans good for you?

Like most beans, cranberry beans are packed with filling fiber – providing 35% of your daily needs in a half-cup serving! They also offer plenty of protein, with very little calories and no fat. Needless to say, cranberry beans make a healthy addition to any salad, side dish or soup.

What do cranberry beans taste like?

We’ve established that they taste nothing like cranberry fruits – so what do cranberry beans bring to your dish? You can expect a subtle, chestnut-like flavor – not too sweet or overpowering. Once cooked, they impart a creamy, satisfying texture to your meal. Yum!
