Essential oils can be used in the kitchen in a variety of ways –from cleaning and purifying to creating a mood. If your desire is to create a calm and soothing home, then setting the tone in the kitchen is the perfect place to start.

When diffusing essential oils in the kitchen, warming and grounding types are a great choice for inviting people in. Think of oils such as nutmeg, clove and cinnamon — especially during colder months — to bring a little spice to your space.

Lemon essential oil has a fresh, clean scent that's perfect for DIY natural cleaners.

Another great use for essential oils in the kitchen is to create your own simple cleaning solutions.  Suggested oils include:

Sweet Orange  Add a few drops to olive oil and you have a great way to polish and shine stainless steel appliances.

Tea Tree Makes the perfect addition to mop water for cleaning floors, or add to white vinegar for a simple countertop spray.

Lemon  Known to be used in a variety of cleaning products, lemon makes a wonderful addition in this recipe for creating a simple, eco-friendly furniture polish.

Furniture Oil

A natural and aromatic solution for dusting wooden furniture and floors.

Ingredients

4 ounces  jojoba oil
12 drops  lemon essential oil
4 drops  lemongrass essential oil
8 drops  sandalwood essential oil

Directions

Combine jojoba and essential oils in a spray bottle. Shake and apply lightly to wood surfaces or onto dusting cloth and wipe.

A note of caution: It’s always a good idea to keep your oils away from too much heat, so an ideal place for storage is a pantry or a cabinet/cupboard away from appliances. Keep your oils in a cool dark place, and they will serve you well not only in the kitchen, but throughout your home.
