You might not think much about toothpaste, but it does play an important role in most of our lives several times each day. In fact, because we use it so often, it is even more important that our toothpaste be as safe as possible than items we use only occasionally. That’s because repeated personal exposure to questionable chemical additives increases our risk for health problems.
Toothpaste ingredients to avoid
It may not surprise you that holistic dentistry tends to favor natural, non-toxic dental products that offer a safer alternative to commercial products with questionable additives. We can all take a cue from holistic dentists when it comes to reducing our exposure to potentially harmful chemicals. Again, this matters most when it comes to what we ingest or apply to our bodies daily. Here are just a few of the toothpaste ingredients you may wish to avoid:
Fluoride
This remains a controversial subject, with many dentists continuing to recommend fluoride while a growing number of others are concerned that too much fluoride can cause fluorosis, which shows up as discolored spots on teeth, as well as other adverse health effects, including neurological and endocrine dysfunction, according to medical research. However, many natural oral care products include fluoride if you prefer it.
Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS)
This common ingredient in commercial toothpaste acts as a surfactant, or foaming agent. However, SLS can be very irritating to delicate oral tissue, even causing mouth ulcers in more than one research study.
Triclosan (TCS)
As one study found, this chemical antimicrobial is so ubiquitous in manufacturing that 75 percent of the U.S. population may be regularly exposed via consumer goods and personal care products. Commonly found in toothpaste, body wash, cosmetics, and more, TCS has been shown to interfere with natural thyroid function, which helps control and regulate your metabolism, and may be a factor in reproductive problems.
Propylene glycol
Used to improve the shelf life, appearance, and texture of many personal care products, this common additive is used as a solvent for oral, intravenous, and topical pharmaceutical preparations. Unfortunately, as one study found, toxic effects may include hyperosmolality, a condition where the body’s fluids have an abnormally high concentration of dissolved substances. This can result in metabolic acidosis, in which the body accumulates too much acid in the blood, acute kidney injury, and more.
Most beneficial toothpaste ingredients
If you have already decided that a natural toothpaste option is safer and healthier for you and your family, what should you consider in selecting the right product?
Xylitol
One of the most effective active ingredients in many natural brands is xylitol, a five-carbon sugar polyol that has been shown to reduce the incidence of dental cavities, and potentially even reverse the development of early stage cavities.
Another study found that xylitol measurably reduces levels of mutans streptococci−cavity promoting bacteria that lurk in dental plaque on the tooth surfaces. As such, xylitol is referred to as a cavity preventive agent.
Now for the fun part, finding safe, healthy alternatives you and your family will love using daily. Your options abound!
