Q: I’ve been intrigued by the idea of a professional microdermabrasion, but I’m nervous about making an appointment. Is there a simple, at-home alternative you’d recommend?

Dr. Linda Miles D.O.M. responds:

A: It is understandable and completely normal to be nervous about trying any medical skin rejuvenating treatment for the first time. Some liken it to visiting the dentist–great for that much needed attention to detail, but not always the most pleasant experience!

DIY Microdermabrasion

With respect to a microdermabrasion treatment, the good news is that there are now at-home alternatives that provide terrific results at a fraction of the price of a professional treatment. Some at-home versions utilize the same aluminum oxide crystals that are used in the professional treatment. Others use natural salts, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) or magnesium oxide crystals.

A single application of an at-home microdermabrasion will not provide the same result as a single professional microdermabrasion session, but it can dramatically retexturize skin to be softer and smoother as well as help visibly diminish the look of fine lines, wrinkles or acne scars. The trick is in regular ongoing use.

I recommend derma e ® Microdermabrasion Scrub –I formulated it with an exclusive crystal blend that includes Dead Sea salt and volcanic sand, both used for centuries for their skin healing benefits. Dead Sea salt is extremely therapeutic and packed with minerals magnesium, bromide and potassium. Volcanic sand is rich in silica and known for its deep-cleansing and exfoliating properties. Together, these ingredients buff away dry, dull, aging cells and retexturize skin. Plus, with natural astringents lime and lemon peel oils, and antioxidants grapeseed and vitamin E, this pro-grade scrub leaves skin soft, smooth and youthful.

Now for the “how to.” Fortunately you don’t have to be a skilled esthetician to use this product correctly. I recommend using Microdermabrasion Scrub once or twice a week.

After cleansing, apply to wet skin with fingertips and gently massage desired areas in circular motion for up to one minute. It is important that you use your fingertips because you are more connected to the process and less likely to scrub too hard. For sensitive skin, I recommend using lighter pressure. Once you’re finished, rinse thoroughly with warm water and pat dry. It’s that simple!

Follow the Microdermabrasion Scrub with a toner, and serum or moisturizer of your choice. You will find that with regular use, this formula will allow your skin to better absorb your other treatment and moisturizing products, giving your skin even more nutrients and overall benefits.
