Is Your Deodorant Dangerous?

Reach into your medicine cabinet and take a close look at the label on your deodorant or antiperspirant. You may find one or more of the following ingredients: aluminum chlorohydrate, aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex gly, parabens (methyl, propyl, ethyl, benzyl or butyl), triclosan, silica and talc.

While there have been no decisively conclusive studies specifically dealing with deodorants, some of these ingredients are derived from toxic chemicals or have harsh properties that may cause minor irritations, especially for individuals with sensitive skin. Parabens are made from toluene, which can be toxic if swallowed or inhaled. Triclosan and silica may cause minor skin irritations.

Most natural deodorants, on the other hand, are made from plant-based formulas and may include baking soda, vegetable glycerin and extracts from teas and herbs. Because they are not antiperspirants, they are free of aluminum compounds and various other chemicals. Effectiveness can vary, so it may be worth it to try out a few brands to find one you really like.
