A few nights ago, I actually shouted out loud, “Stop talking! I can’t sleep!” Which startled my fiance, who’d been snoozing silently. When I have something serious on my mind, I just can’t seem to stop that interior dialogue, relax, and ease myself into slumber. I have arguments with my neighbor, mentally compose poetry and edit my blog—all sometime between 3 a.m. and dawn. Honestly, it would be very nice if someone would just remove my batteries in the evening and put them back in the morning! That’s not possible, of course, but there is L-theanine, an amino acid I learned about recently on my favorite health talk show.
Found naturally in green tea, L-theanine promotes a feeling of calmness.* Which is kind of crucial when anxiety is keeping you up at night. I’m going to try taking it 30 minutes before bedtime and see how it goes. I currently will take melatonin when I have trouble falling asleep, and it works—but that doesn’t always help if you wake up in the middle of the night and your mind is racing!
By the way, if you’re wondering what I’m stewing about…I have some great news! My man recently proposed, which is extremely exciting! It’s also a bit nerve-wracking, as anyone who has been a bride knows. I’m trying to be a “Chillzilla” instead of a “Bridezilla,” of course. I am not sure that a Chillzilla would necessarily need L-theanine to catch 40 winks…but hey, fake it till ya make it!
