How Clothing Can Help You Lose Weight

Losing weight feels great. You have more energy, renewed health and stronger self-esteem–not to mention the bonus benefit of being able to fit into those skinny jeans again! Maybe it’s never occurred to you, but clothing can  be a good tool when it comes to weight loss. Here are a few ways to make fashion work in your favor.

Closet full of choicesClean Out Your Closet
If you’ve got more than just a little wiggle room in your current clothing, clear your closet of all the oversized items that no longer fit. Pack everything into a bag and stow it somewhere far from the bedroom. After a month or two has passed, drop off the bag at a local clothing donation center.

Holding onto pants, skirts and shirts “just in case” sets you up for failure. Even if everything’s out of sight, knowing it’s there keeps the possibility of making excuses or caving in the back of your mind. Purging your closet will give you confidence in your abilities and keep you on track to succeed!

Try on Tight Fits
It’s tempting to keep checking the mirror as you try to lose weight, but looks can be deceiving. Instead, use a pair of tight jeans to help gauge your progress. Try them on every two weeks, preferably at the same time of day. If your efforts have been a success, they’ll get looser and more comfortable with each fitting. You’ll be wearing them out to dinner and a movie in no time!

Treat Yourself
As your size starts to shrink, let yourself splurge on a new outfit or two as a reward for all your hard work. Browsing racks of smaller-sized clothing, trying something on and seeing it fit not only boosts mood, it’s great motivation to keep going.
