If you’re used to taming unruly tresses and curbing flyaway curls with conventional styling gel, sneak a peek at the label. Does it contain unpronounceable chemical compounds, fake fragrances or artificial colors? There’s no need to fret. You can easily make your own (natural!) hair gel at home with just 3 simple ingredients.

keep every hair in place with this DIY natural hair gel recipe

Ingredients:

  • ¼ teaspoon unflavored gelatin or agar agar (vegan substitute) — for a thicker hold, add more gelatin or agar agar
  • ½ cup distilled water
  • 5 drops of your favorite pure essential oil (I like sweet orange oil or peppermint oil)

To make the gel:

In a small saucepan, heat water until hot (not boiling), then transfer to small, heat-safe bowl and stir together with gelatin or agar-agar until combined.

Refrigerate for 2-3 hours or until mixture is set.

Add your favorite essential oil and mix again.

Store in a small jar or squeeze bottle. Gel is ready for styling!

Note: this DIY gel will keep its consistency for up to 2 weeks – just remember to store it in the refrigerator.
