Crispy Fake Bacon Bits (Vegan)

by | Updated: December 3rd, 2016

“I could never give up bacon,” meat-eaters announce when I mention that I’m vegan. I don’t get it. Bacon is smelly and greasy, and it’s full of saturated fat, sodium and cholesterol. My Crispy Fake Bacon Bits are a delectable and much healthier plant-based alternative. This recipe–cleverly crafted with coconut flakes doused in liquid aminos and vegan Worcestershire sauce–is perfection, if I do say so myself. I’m so obsessed, I sprinkle bits over basically everything: soups, salads, potatoes, you name it!

Ingredients

1 cup unsweetened coconut flakes
¼ tsp. onion powder
1/8 tsp. garlic powder
6-8 sprays liquid aminos
1 Tbsp. vegan Worcestershire sauce
1/8 tsp. liquid smoke

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Combine all ingredients in a small bowl. Mix until even coated and well combined.
  3. Evenly spread out flakes on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Bake for 15-20 minutes, shaking the pan or flipping over the flakes about every 5 minutes to avoid over-baking.
  5. Let the flakes sit for 10 minutes so they get fully crisp.
