A great way to celebrate Earth Day with your children is to help them connect with nature. And one of my favorite ways to connect with nature is to create bird feeders from recycled materials. Here’s an easy Earth Day craft you can do with your little ones that will allow you to show them how you can reuse everyday items for new and important purposes, but it will also give you the opportunity to talk about how our trash impacts the animals in our direct surroundings as well as the world.
With just an empty toilet paper roll, peanut butter, and some bird seed you can create a bird feeder that can conveniently hang outside of every home, from city apartment to rural farm.
What you’ll need:
Empty toilet paper roll
Peanut butter (sunflower butter may be substituted)
Hole punch and/or scissors
Yarn or string
Bird seed
Instructions
- Make sure all toilet paper is removed from the cardboard tube.
- Cut a length of string or yarn (approximately 8-10 inches). Punch opposing holes on one end of toilet paper tube and loop yarn through the holes, tying the ends together.
- Using a knife, paint brush or basting brush, coat cardboard tube with peanut butter.
- Spread bird seed on a shallow dish, and roll the coated cardboard tube in the bird seed until the peanut butter is covered.Shake off excess seed and allow to dry.
Now your lovely bird feeder is ready to hang outside for the local birds and your family to enjoy!
