Oils, balms, washes, conditioners, waxes, colognes…the number of products available to care for your beard is many, and choosing can be quite overwhelming. Beard care has expanded greatly over the past few years, so it’s becoming more and more difficult to narrow it down to what’s really necessary. Some may choose to use everything this expansion has come to offer, while others may prefer to stick to the basics.
What exactly are the basics? For those who want a short and sweet beard grooming routine, beard oil or balm (or both) are the way to go. So the question is — what’s the difference between the two?
Both products are beneficial, but in different ways. First, let’s look at how they are similar.
What oil & balm have in common
Whether you use beard oil or beard balm, both your beard and the skin beneath it will be conditioned to the max, which is especially great for men who suffer with dry, itchy skin. When the skin is moisturized, healthy hair growth is promoted, making a much softer and more attractive beard. Because of these conditioning products, you will have less breakage and split ends–the main culprits of a thin, scraggly looking beard– and no one wants that. The better your beard looks, chances are, the more likely you’ll be to keep it, and before you know it, you will achieve epic beard status and be living an epic bearded life.
Now, let’s take a look at how the products differ.
Beard oil
Obviously this product is oil based. Just squeeze a few drops of beard oil into your hands, rub them together, and evenly distribute the oil throughout your beard. It absorbs quickly, and you’re left with a smooth, soft, subtle shine.
Beard balm
Beard balm will give your beard a little extra conditioning and will also repair damaged hair.
Beard balm is also easy to use. Simply scrape the product out of the tin with your thumbnail and warm in your hands, then rub it evenly throughout your beard. Use it throughout the day or as needed. Some even use it as an overnight conditioner.
Which is best for you?
If you’re torn between the two, consider the current health of your beard. If your beard is already in good shape and you’re looking for a nice conditioner with the added shine, oil is the way to go. If you have a more dry beard with patchy areas and split ends, the more intense conditioning from the beard balm is probably your best bet. If you want the best of both worlds, you can always use both. You can’t over-do it when it comes to beard care, my friend!
It really comes down to what you prefer and what you think you need. No matter what you choose, your beard will be in good health as long as you’re caring for it. Let it grow, friends. It’s always beard season!
