The vast majority of us start the day with a cup (or three) of coffee. Surprisingly, coffee is a great source of antioxidants. Coffee can be beneficial to health and weight loss efforts when consumed at the right times, without adding excessive amounts of sugar and fat. Most flavored coffee drinks have the nutritional profile of a banana split, but these five recipes provide a tasty twist to your morning routine that will keep your mouth and waist line happy.
Note: All of these recipes can be mixed in a blender or shaker cup. My two personal favorite tools are the BlenderBottle (with wire whisk) and the Magic Bullet. Both are convenient to use and produce a smooth mixture.
Cinnamon Frappe
Probably the tastiest recipe! This guilt-free treat will keep you satisfied all morning. The protein provides satiety, while the cinnamon helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels.
- 2 cups hot coffee
- 1 scoop (30 g) vanilla-flavored whey protein
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- Optional: 1-2 packets stevia
Coconut Express
Coconut milk has the same texture as most store-bought creamers, but also provides a hint of tropical flavor. Two tablespoons of coconut milk contain roughly 50 calories, most of which come from medium chain triglycerides (MCTs). This type of fat is easily digested, but difficult for your body to store. You may never go back to traditional creamers once you try this one!
- 1 to 2 cups hot coffee
- 2 Tbsp. organic coconut milk
- Optional: 2 packets stevia
Double Chocolate Overload
Chocolate lovers beware: this is addicting! I can’t think of a more stimulating way to start the morning. Cocoa powder contains naturally occurring caffeine, so be prepared for an added jolt after sipping this concoction.
- 1 to 2 cups hot coffee
- 1 scoop (30 g) chocolate-flavored whey protein
- 1 tsp. organic cocoa powder
- Optional: 1-2 packets stevia
Mocha-Vanilla Shake
This is my favorite Sunday morning treat. The Mocha-Vanilla Shake is high in protein, contains a little healthy fat and is low in carbohydrates. Sweet fix = solved!
- 1 cup cold coffee
- 1 scoop (30 g) vanilla– or chocolate-flavored protein (for added creaminess, try casein protein)
- 2 Tbsp. organic coconut milk
- 4-5 ice cubes (crushed in blender or Magic Bullet)
- Optional: 1-2 packets stevia
This is what I consume first thing in the morning most days of the week. The combination of MCTs and caffeine gives me focused, clean energy that lasts.
- 2 cups hot coffee
- 2 Tbsp. MCT oil
- 2 packets stevia
